Welcome to Shambhala

The vision of Shambhala begins with the understanding that all humans at the very ground of their being have basic goodness and wisdom.

According to the Shambhala tradition, there is a natural source of radiance and brilliance in the world, which is the innate wakefulness of human beings. This is the basis, in myth and inspiration, of the Kingdom of Shambhala, an enlightened society of fearlessness, dignity and compassion.

The Shambhala Meditation Center of Portland is part of an international community of urban meditation and rural retreat centers founded by Chögyam Trungpa Rinpoche and further developed by his son and lineage holder Sakyong Mipham Rinpoche.

We offer free meditation instruction, classes, a comprehensive curriculum in Buddhist studies and Shambhala Training - a progressive series of weekend secular workshops that help students establish a personal meditation practice in order to engage more fully and compassionately in the world.

We offer opportunities for group meditation (Sunday mornings from 9 am til noon & Tuesday evenings from 7 to 9 pm), contemplative arts, classes on Shambhala Buddhism, and training throughout the year. For more information about upcoming events visit the programs page or the calendar. To learn more about Shambhala, visit Shambhala.org

The sokshing (shown right) for the Great Stupa of Dharmakaya (located in northern Colorado and shown above) is from Oregon. The sokshing was cut from a single 110-foot incense cedar tree in the forests of southwestern Oregon. Chagdad Tulku Rinpoche selected this great tree. The sokshing is installed in the Stupa in the same orientation with which it once stood.

The Great Stupa of Dharmakaya is an expression of the aspiration for peace, harmony and equanimity for all beings. Rising 108 feet from its foundation, construction of The Great Stupa was initiated in 1988 and the monument was consecrated in August 2001.
